UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT EASTERN DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA

PUBLIC NOTICE

REGARDING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF NEXTGEN

On Tuesday, July 6, 2021, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California will go live on the Next Generation of CM/ECF (NextGen), the latest version of the Federal Judiciary’s case management and electronic case filing system.  This upgrade provides benefits including Central Sign-On, which allows attorneys to use one PACER login and password to access any NextGen court (district, appellate and bankruptcy) in which they practice.  On July 6, 2021, e-filers will be required to use their own individual PACER login and password to access the California Eastern District electronic filing system.  Preparing for the NextGen implementation requires a 3-step process by all attorneys. This email provides detailed information, along with a one page guide on how to start preparing for NextGen.

Step 1:  The first step is to obtain your own individual PACER account if you are currently sharing one, or upgrade your existing individual legacy PACER account. Shared law firm PACER accounts will no longer be useable once the court has upgraded to NextGen, therefore, you MUST have your own individual PACER account.  We are asking all members of the bar to prepare now by completing this step.

Upgrade or create your own PACER account.  Many PACER accounts have already been upgraded.  If any of the following are true, you already have an upgraded PACER account and you can proceed to Step 2.

•  You upgraded your PACER account for another NextGen court.

•  You created your PACER account after August 10, 2014.

•  Your PACER username is at least eight characters.  Legacy accounts only have six characters and need to be upgraded.

If none of the above are true, you must upgrade your legacy PACER account now.

Step 2:  Know your current CM/ECF login and password.  You will need your current CM/ECF login credentials.  If you do not know your login and/or password, you will need to reset them by going to our NextGen webpage and clicking Reset your CM/ECF Login/Password.  We are asking all members of the bar to take care of Step 2 now.  You will not be able to complete Step 3, which will allow you to access NextGen, unless both Step 1 and Step 2 are completed.

If you already have an upgraded PACER account and you know your CM/ECF login and password, no action is required by you until after the NextGen go live date of July 6, 2021.  We will send out detailed information for Step 3 as we get closer to that date.

Please refer to the attached one-page guide to find all of the links you need to prepare for NextGen.  Also, check our NextGen webpage periodically for up-to-date information.
