Judicial Externships are hosted by individual judges for Fall, Winter/Spring, and Summer terms. Consideration is limited to active law school students. Students may receive academic credit and should contact their law school for more information.

Qualifications and how to apply may vary by judge, so applicants should review each judge’s requirements carefully. Students are encouraged to re-check this page periodically for additional opportunities that may open with other judges in the Eastern District of California. Students also are encouraged to contact their law school externship coordinator to determine if a judge has registered an opporunity with their law school but has not posted it to this page to limit conisderation.

Applicants for Judicial Externships should be aware of the following:
- Judicial externs do not receive compensation from the court.
- Judicial externs are subject to a Code of Conduct, which can be found on the district court’s website under Careers> Employment Information> Code of Conduct.
- Judicial externs are required to undergo an FBI fingerprint background check prior to the start of employment, and all information provided is subject to verification and background investigation.
- Judicial externs must be eligible to work in the United States and must complete and provide acceptable documentation for the Department of Homeland Security - U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification form. Students who do not hold U.S. citizenship should consult with their law school prior to applying to confirm this requirement can be met.
