A Tribute to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

The Court mourns the passing of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on December 1, 2023.  Appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, Justice O’Connor was the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court, where she served until her retirement in 2006. Justice O’Connor was assigned to the Ninth Circuit, which includes the Eastern District of California, and was a regular participant at Circuit conferences and events. In addition to breaking the glass ceiling at the Supreme Court, Justice O’Connor was known for her devotion to civics education, founding the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute for American Democracy. Each of the Judges of the Eastern District of California have been touched in some way by Justice O’Connor and her extensive jurisprudence. Judge Calabretta was fortunate to observe her common sense approach to the law firsthand as a law clerk to Justice Stevens during the 2004 October Term, and remembers fondly her wit, grace, and the generosity she gave of her time. Justice O’Connor made an indelible mark on the law, and the Court celebrates her life and her public service.
